Guided Art Walks (With Extras!)

There’s a new way to explore the world-class public art in Covington and Newport this summer: take one of the free guided art walks being offered by NKY Public Arts Network—with fun extras built in.

Jill Morenz, who leads the tours for the Network and the Catalytic Fund, explained that she wanted to introduce guests not only to the murals and statues, but also to the shops, restaurants and bars that make the neighborhoods so special. She is partnering with meetNKY to offer these tours to both residents and tourists.

For example, the Sweet and Spicy Tour begins with treats from Golden Gelato in Covington and winds through the downtown neighborhood for about ¾ of a mile. Guests will munch on flavored pretzels from Yankee Doodle Deli as they get an up-close look at the murals and art-related businesses in the area. The tour ends at Rich’s Proper Food and Drink for a spicy cocktail.

The Newport Art and Architecture Tour includes the murals, statues and buildings of historic Monmouth Street, Newport on the Levee and the approach to the Purple People Bridge. The other Newport tour, called Sharks, Cannon and Bell, includes some history of the courthouse, as well.

Other tours include browsing time at local galleries, a behind-the-scenes look at the Goebel Park Glockenspiel and some incredible mosaics tucked here and there in the river cities.

To learn more and reserve a spot on one of the free tours, please visit the NKY Art Tours website.

Art of The Past, Present, & Future

Kara Walker: Cut to the Quick

With a fresh start of a new year brings in new opportunities to engage with art in profound and meaningful ways!  Art in Cincinnati is enriching and entertaining, with eventful explorations into the imagination that will make you want to discover and learn more about what the city has to offer in the expressive community.  From past to present, Cincinnati has always shown its immense support for diversity in the Arts and continues to bring excellent pieces from all around the world, from artists of all backgrounds to our museums, galleys, shows, public spaces, and interactive exhibitions.  Truly making this city the perfect atmosphere, when it comes to having fun in the future of creativity.  So, choose your own adventure at any of the many places that are bringing more artistic experiences to the people!

Locals top favorite and most popular museum in the area to encounter art is, The Cincinnati Art Museum within the beautiful landscape of Eden Park in the hills of Mt. Adams.  The historic museum that overlooks the city was founded in 1881, making it one of the oldest in the United States. Their impressive collection includes over 65,000 pieces of work that span 6,000 years of art making.  This incredible museum always has a magnificent collection of work on display but they also have rotating shows that are by well-known artists with pieces that are admired throughout the world.

The prolific art of the contemporary artist, Kara Walker is currently on display until January 16th and the exhibition is titled, Cut to the Quick.  This body of work is deep, powerful, and eye opening to say the least, with themes of examining stereotypes and stories about mythology, identity, racism, culture, and history.  Walker transforms the gallery space into a series of different styles of pieces that are thought provoking and fascinating.  With each step you take through the exhibition you find different forms of art that Walker experiments with, such as installation, sculpture, printmaking, and the written word.  Walker incorporates personal quotes to create a dialogue with the viewer and gives a sense of the inside of an artist’s mind.  This work challenges the audience to ask questions about the world around them and Walker gives them the opportunity to interact with the work by having the participant answer questions on addressing histories and narratives of the present.  There is also a place of reflection incorporated in this gallery show for people to really sit with their thoughts on Walker’s compelling work that should remain in your memory and shared with others.

Early Learning Fun in NKY

Stories, letters, nature & sensory play appeal to young kids

Northern Kentucky has a wealth of fun learning opportunities for young children. They love to spot letters and identify colors. They can be completely still as they squat down to observe a passing snail or spend hours running, jumping and climbing.

We’ve pulled together many of the ways that our region integrates teachable moments into our environments and encourages curiosity.

Story Walks

Imagine reading the first page of a story with your child while standing under a shady tree in a park. For the second page of the story, you walk together along a path to a sunny flower bed. The third page is located near a playground. As you read the story, you stroll from page to page through the park until the story ends. This experience is called a Story Walk and there are quite a few to be found this summer in Northern Kentucky. Find the entire list here

Ground Games

Hopping, pointing and laughing are rewarded when kids do the fun activities provided by Read Ready Covington. The organization created large stickers that have been placed in Covington parks, at playgrounds and even inside a laundromat. The stickers are printed with objects and ideas for playful learning. Find them at places like Randolph Park, Devou Park and Leo Foster Ballfield. The stickers don’t last forever, so some of the locations may change as they are removed and replaced.

Alphabet Hunts

As part of its goal to increase the number of kids who start kindergarten ready to read, the City of Covington has installed complete alphabets, in the form of pink and yellow signs, throughout five of its neighborhoods. Each sign has a word (apple, volcano, yarn), an image and the encouragement, “You found a word. Now find another!” Some of the signs have Spanish words, as well.

Families can pick up a free map and passport-style checklist at the city building to start their hunt. When the passport is completed and turned in, the child will receive a free Tshirt.

Nature Encounters

Little kids love to learn about the plants and animals they see in their neighborhood. Two of the top nature educators in the area take it several notches up, providing immersive fun for families.

In Covington, Behringer-Crawford Museum’s NaturePlay is a self-contained, accessible outdoor area that offers kid-sized log cabins and caves, a climbable wooden flatboat, a spot to dig for fossils and gardens planted with native flowers and shrubs.

AJ Jolly Park’s Environmental Education Center in Alexandria is filled with wonders. Kids can get up close and personal with fish and turtles, watch birds flit around nearby branches and even examine the poop from various animals (an exhibit that always leads to giggles). After they’ve learned everything they wanted to know, they can walk the trails outside. The center is open all year and there is always something to see in the surrounding landscape.

Public Libraries

Northern Kentucky residents are fortunate to have such robust early childhood programming and resources available at our local libraries. From story time and science for tots to the “1,000 Books Before Kindergarten” program, families can rely on the friendly librarians to engage their children with fun, educational activities. Check out the programs at Boone CountyCampbell County and Kenton County

If you’ve got young kids and you live in NKY, you’re in a good place!

Artisan Markets in Cincinnati

The Cincinnati area has many markets scattered throughout almost every neighborhood and they all offer a variety of different things for everyone to enjoy!  Most of them are outdoors and have plenty of things to engage in for the whole family!  A lot of them have local food and support small businesses, while highlighting community involvement!  There are a ton of opportunities for artist to sell their work and meet with the public at these markets and we know just the ones to check out this summer!

The City Flea

This urban flea market is a crowd pleaser and is in one of the most beautiful parts of Cincinnati!  This market is located in the historic Washington Park right in front of the mesmerizing Music Hall.  The market is head once a month and they have dozens of vendors from craft makers to community organizations, and startup businesses.  They have anything from vintage wears to contemporary art, and much, much more!  Make an entire day out of visiting the City Flea!  There is so much to do in the park for kids and adults!  The water feature is a perfect way to cool off from the heat and the patio bar is an excellent place to grab a drink and relax!

In the art district of Over-the- Rhine you can experience a lively and fun celebration of creativity down Main street on every second Sunday of the month at this stellar market!  This market has a wide range of artists and local businesses to support and meet with!  The Art Academy of Cincinnati is usually there with their artists, instructing workshops for people to join in on.  There are performances, live music, and lots of food trucks to choose from!  This market gives off a block party vibe for people of all ages to have a fun time at!

Art on Vine

This market started as a class project and evolved into a popular market that showcases artists, craft makers, and many local businesses that we love!  The market is at different locations and always keeps you excited for the next one!  Some of the locations include Fountain Square and Rhinegeist Brewery.

Creative Arts and Music Festival in Cincinnati

We are excited to start announcing events that are happening in Cincinnati for the spring and summer!  Especially the ones that are outdoors and have a lot of different things for people of all ages to experience and enjoy!

One that we’re participating in and can’t wait to attend is “CampSITE Social Art: An Abstract Junction”.  This Social Art Event is a grassroots opportunity for creatives to showcase what they do and connect with the community in meaningful and expressive ways!  This one-day Creative Arts Festival will have live music, interactive art, a variety of vendors, activities for all ages, a kid’s craft area, live painting, local food, and so much more! The event is FREE with a suggested donation for support and will take place on Sunday, June 6, 5-9pm.

‘Abstract Junction” (@abstractjunction) is a collective relationship driven studio focused on unique projects and events rooted in thoughtful consumption, community growth and creative potential.  Co-founder, Rachel “Rae” Miller (@raemillerarts) is from Cincinnati and is frequently here to see family and continues to work on new projects with artists and the larger Cincinnati community.  Rae is inspired by taking time for self, through creative practice. Over the years her drawings expanded into hand stitching, screen printing and clever upcycling. Since finding strength in her personal practice, she has been able to grow works through collaborations with others. Along with a creative background, Rae brings to Abstract Junction a decade of work in systems change with social impact organizations. For this event she has teamed up with me, Christen Collins (@christencc), local creator, community arts educator, and blog writer for Everything Cincy in an effort to bring more creative experiences to the people of Cincinnati!  Not only will Rae and I be there as co-coordinators, but we will also be there with our own artwork as featured vendors right in front of Rae’s permanent mural piece at CampSITE Sculpture Park (2866 Colerain Ave)!

The event will feature live music by local musicians, Juls Lawrence, Abby Vice, and Preston Bell Charles III.  The performers will be playing in the center of the park on a geometric dome stage that has a perfect patch of grass right in front of it for folks to lay down a blanket to sit on and enjoy the show.  So, bring a blanket or chairs!

Juls Lawrence has a passion for songwriting and is studying music education at Xavier University.  She combines her history of classical music with her love of the blues. Abby Vice is a self-taught piano player with a passion for instrumental music, Vice creates ambient trip hop with bass-driven beats.  Preston Bell Charles III participates and collaborates with positive cultural experiences to broaden and assist in enlightening those who are seeking the betterment of themselves and their communities. A teacher, performer, and passionate community member. Preston blends his loves into beautiful modern classical music.  The music on the main stage ends at 9pm but they encourage people to bring instruments to the bonfire to jam out into the night.

The list of vendors are unique and diverse, offering a variety of different opportunities for everyone to engage in!  Moxy Cincinnati, the Meal Kit Service Prepared with Local Ingredients by Local Chefs will be there as one of our food vendors along with Street Pops, gourmet ice pops made with fresh fruit. No artificial flavors or colors ever!  The Community Education Department of the Art Academy of Cincinnati will be there with information about ways to get involved in art and will have a kid’s craft table with creative projects that children can partake in!  Everything Cincy will even be there as your one stop shop to learn about what they offer and how they support local businesses!  The event will also highlight local creatives with artwork such as, photography, ceramics, beautiful kaleidoscopes, and delightful tie-dyed items to name a few!

This event is a great opportunity for the entire family to come together with the community to experience artistic expression and have a lot of fun emerging themselves in a creative environment!  The event welcomes everyone to join in on the collective consciousness of using our imaginations to cultivate beautiful connections of positivity.

We can’t wait to see you there!

Cincinnati Outdoor Sculpture Art

We took an adventure around Cincinnati to explore some of the many sculptures that are featured outside throughout the area and had a magical time engaging with these works of art!  All of them are free to take a look at and are very pleasant places to visit!  Most of them are interactive experiences and others stand so tall you have to take a step back to view them.  From along the riverside to surrounding neighborhoods, Cincinnati has a lot of sculptures to discover and enjoy!  Here are a few of our favorites!

The Crystal Garden

On the University of Cincinnati’s eastern side of campus, you can find yourself casually coming across a garden of large geometric crystal formations that are shooting out from the ground!  These fragmented structures have tunnels that you can walk through and give a sense of what it’s like being inside of a crystal gemstone.  Look up and around to admire lines, angles, shapes, and colors that collide together in perfect harmony.  These giant crystal sculptures are made out of a variety of materials which are fascinating and fitting for the connection of fine art and architecture.  The enchanting quality they have is mesmerizing to say the least!  Crystal Garden was created by artist Dennis Oppenheim and the university has many other impressive sculptures in different spaces indoor and outdoor on campus. https://magazine.uc.edu/issues/0714/ArtSculpture.html

Cincinnati Art Museum Art Climb

The Cincinnati Art Museum is always our go-to place to experience art in all its glory and now that they have stairs called the Art Climb you can get a little exercise in while seeing some amazing outdoor sculptures!  Starting from the bottom of the stairs is the piece LBD Duty Free by Chakaia Booker, as you make your way up the staircase you see another sculpture called, Cube ’97 by Tony Rosenthal, then when you make it to the top you’re greeted by the stunning piece, Skybound by Barton Rubenstein!  All of this is nestled up the hill of the main entrance to Eden Park and leads you to the Museum. https://www.cincinnatiartmuseum.org/visit/art-climb/

International Friendship Park

This lovely park has so much to offer for recreation but also features a number of awesome sculptures in a beautiful setting along the Ohio River.  While walking the educational pathway you will see the incredible mirror structure called, Castle of Air by Artist, Architect: Peter Haimerl.  Stand outside of it and take in the reflection of the sky and trees.  Notice the way the sculpture mimics nature then walk inside the structure to look at your own reflection in different positions!  As you walk further down you will find the Seven Vessels Ascending/Descending by David Nash overlooking the river.  Then once you reach the end of the park you will discover the massive Crystalline Tower sculpture by Susan Ewing that is truly out of this world and a sight to see! https://www.cincinnatiparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Ted-Berry-Brochure_ADA.pdf

CampSITE Sculpture Park

This social sculpture park features a range of different art and artist throughout its indoor and outdoor space.  When visiting this collective and inclusive environment you will be in a state of wonderment by the murals on the walls, sculptures in the grass, and the installations coming off the buildings! One of the most incredible parts about this place is that it is continuing to cultivate opportunities for creative expression in new ways each and every day! CampSITE has many events for everyone to participate in, making it the perfect place to experience creativity coming to life in the community!  They even have live music in the park, on Wednesday nights in June, where you can listen to jazz music and hang out by their cozy campfire! A recurring event they have is their Second Saturday Markets that are every second Saturday from 12-4pm from May – October.  The Art Academy of Cincinnati currently has their playful duct tape sculptures on display there that you can interact with and transcend to a whimsical state of mind.  Another event that they have coming up is a micro creative arts festival called, CampSITE Social Art: An Abstract Junction, that will take place on Sunday, June 6, 5-9pm. This Social Art Event is a grassroots opportunity for creatives to showcase what they do and connect with the community in meaningful and expressive ways! There will be live music, interactive art, a variety of vendors, activities for all ages, a kid’s craft area, live painting, local food, and so much more!

See you there Cincinnati!

Remake Learning Days Festival Celebrates Hands-On Learning

On May 15-17, 2021, Greater Cincinnati will host the virtual Remake Learning Days festival to inspire families to spend time learning together.

Educators, artists, scientists and makers from across the region are sharing more than 100 lessons, activities and demonstrations, both on demand and as interactive sessions.

Remake Learning Days Across America, a celebration of learning innovation, is in its fifth year. Greater Cincinnati joins 17 other regions to encourage and support families and students.

The festival will provide new connections between the families of Greater Cincinnati and the organizations and resources located here. The virtual events in the festival will be a helpful introduction to the participating artists, teachers, scientists and makers. Families can explore the opportunities they offer and follow up for more if they wish.

To ensure that more families can participate in the event, learning activity kits filled with supplies for more than 15 of the festival’s events will be created. These kits will be available for free on a first-come, first-served basis at several locations in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. Find a full list of locations where kits can be picked up at https://remakelearningdays.org/gc/free-activity-kits/.

During Greater Cincinnati Remake Learning Days, families can find activities and lessons appropriate for children from preschool through 12th grade, all of which can be done remotely. The activities range from arts and crafts, to STEM, outdoor learning and much more. A full listing of events can be viewed at https://remakelearningdays.org/gc/

Remake Learning Days Across America Producer Dorie Taylor hopes that “parents, caregivers and educators across all communities will be inspired by the learning kids are doing alongside their caring adults and think about what they hope to see in their own communities.”

“There may not be another moment in our lifetimes when educators are thinking as boldly about what education and learning might be than right now. We should embrace these innovations as signals about what’s possible,” said Gregg Behr, executive director of the Grable Foundation and co-chair of Remake Learning.

Join the virtual Greater Cincinnati Remake Learning Days on May 15-17.
