Murals of The Cincy Wallflower

Artwork & Photos by: Rebekah Del Matto

Throughout the Queen City area there are over 30 charming murals made by Rebekah Del Matto also known as The Cincy Wallflower. She is a local Muralist for hire that will amaze you with how she can transform any space that you have into a work of art! Her murals add incredible visual elements that can be created on just about any surface and at any location. Many of her pieces are lovely accent walls in homes, businesses, and now in parks!

@cincywallflower

“I love so much about what I do. I have always
been in customer service and went to DAAP for Fine Arts. I think in a way it’s combining the two skills I’ve worked on the most. Being a custom mural artist you have to be flexible to work with so many different people and really enjoy the hands-on part of installing the mural. I love working with each client in tweaking my style to fit theirs. Sometimes you get lucky in getting a job where you have full creative freedom but a lot of it is learning about the person’s style/business and making sure it suits their wants/needs. I love when I make something I’m excited about but that the client is even more.”

Rebekah is always gracious to share insights about her experiences as The Cincy Wallflower. We had the pleasure of getting more familiar with everything that she does by asking her a few questions about her creative pursuits. She graciously provided us with fantastic details to her collaborations that brought new meaning to the positive
influence that Art can make on an environment and the community. There are endless opportunities to be enchanted by The Cincy Wallflower paintings and the list of locations that the public can view her murals is growing rapidly.

I have been honored to work in some awesome locations in Cincy/Northern Kentucky. You can see my work at Arnold’s Bar & Grill, UGO Gelato, Lunar Beauty Bar, Goose & Elder, Washington Park, Ziegler Park, Madtree Alcove, Bomb Cat Salon, Garden Grove Organics, and a handful of new locations that are soon to be open!”

Take a journey exploring these amazing places to see the diversity among the different styles of murals that Rebekah specializes in. There isn’t any idea too far out there that this talented artist won’t entertain to create!

“I view each project as a victory and
challenge and when they are complete
you can’t help but feel a little proud.
The two murals that make me feel
most proud would be the one located
at UGO Gelato and a mural I painted
for a local Airbnb. The Airbnb mural is
a project that I feel represents how my
art career has been connected and
grown. It’s a golden mustard backdrop
with smaller floral and illustrated
elements that created a wallpaper
effect. I have always been obsessed
with wallpaper and I think that’s where
my obsession with murals came from. I
love pieces that use the color and style
of the space to elevate and unite the
room.

UGO gelato is a mural displaying Sicily’s famous prickly pear. It was such a fun way to stick to my ‘color- blocking’ style but at a slightly smaller scale to add depth and detail. This mural is the one that is most often re-posted. It’s so much fun to see others enjoying the art and really see how art can be used to excite others and also bring attention to the business.”

At Arnold’s Bar and Grill are themed wall paintings that are inspired by the fascinating history and aesthetics of the restaurant. The murals reference the past and interpret the imagery in contemporary ways that are delightful to look at and fun to take selfies with!” Their Chef, Kayla Robison was one of the first people to commission The Cincy Wallflower to create a piece specific to what she loves to do for a living in her personal kitchen that she does a lot of cooking in! Kayla often films how to shows in her kitchen and you can catch a glimpse of the custom made mural.

@commandernbeef

“The first mural I ever painted was for a
friend/coworker Kayla Robison and it
was in her kitchen at home. Since she is
a chef in the city she wanted a food
inspired mural to be the backdrop to her
cooking segments she films in her
kitchen. She had full confidence in me
and actually gave me freedom in how I
executed her vision. To be technical it
wasn’t actually painted with a brush but
was created with paint markers since it
was an intricate wall of illustrations
displaying various vegetables. This
illustration style has popped up in a
handful of other murals I have done and
was such a fun starting point in my
creative path as a muralist.”

For each mural The Cincy Wallflower goes over concepts with you to bring the perfect design ideas to life for any desired destination! She goes through the entire process with you from start to finish to ensure that the outcome is exactly how you envisioned it to be.

“I think working in nurseries and playrooms is so much fun! Especially if it’s for a first time mother. One nursery I painted was for a couple that I met from bartending. When they found out that they were pregnant they reached out and wanted an arch of flowers around their crib. It was so sweet to have a full circle of friendship and go from being regulars at the bar to getting to work with them in creating a sentimental mural for their next step in becoming parents. We worked together to create a color floral piece and got to add a couple of Iris’ to represent her grandmother’s favorite flower.”

Her website is extremely user friendly and very easy to navigate through. On her site will discover some of her fabulous pieces in her online gallery to get inspiration and maybe even start planning a mural as a gift for Mothers Day coming up!

This reimagined space has been transformed into a creative hideaway for the community to engage in. The whimsical art that is permanently on display was made by a collaboration of local artists and residents to encourage everyone to enjoy the environment around them.

The Art of Imagination Alley

At the entrance is an amazing archway to walk under and around with mosaic tiles and inspirational messages. The words, “Imagine Peace and Unity”, are at the top of the arch to welcome people into the space. Along the walls and on the ground are more mosaic pieces depicting images in nature with inspiring phrases to uplift and bring a sense of joy. Lead artist and project manager Suzanne Fisher worked with local community centers and art clubs such as The Art Academy of Cincinnati and Peaslee Neighborhood Center to bring the design to life. The installation of the mosaic works of art throughout the alley were developed by hundreds of people and remain a cherished part of OTR.

Another awesome element to this space is the huge mural stretching across one of the buildings that brightens up the bricks and brings joy to all who encounter it. Its captivating movement leads you down the alley with a vibrant design that displays endearing qualities of shared sentimental moments.

The peoples’ art and creativity can flourish here

We are family, all part of the beloved community.”

New Bengals Murals, WHO DEY!

The Cincinnati Bengals are back for a new season and local artists are designing new Bengals murals in the city to show their support! There are new fan favorites to check out when you’re downtown that will be sure to get you in the football spirit. Take lots of selfies and group photos with them! Don’t forget to tag the creators and the team to keep the momentum going and promote positivity between sports and art.

Rule The Jungle Mural

Near the home venue of the National Football League, Paycor Stadium (previously known as Paul Brown Stadium) is a massive mural with a tiger roaring the words, “ Rule The Jungle”. Our outdoor stadium is referred to as, “The Jungle” and is where our Tigers take down their opponents on the field. The Bengals have always been known for their legendary saying, “Welcome to the Jungle” but recently adopted this new phrase that displays a fierce confidence for great achievement!

Rule the Jungle Bengals Mural on the side of a building with a tiger.
Rule the Jungle Mural

Rule The Jungle signifies the high standards and energy we expect to see on the field, in the stands and in all areas of our organization. Rule The Jungle is a mentality that displays our confidence and strength. It is the feeling of exuberance each fan will feel on gameday, like a queen or king sitting on a throne, as we celebrate together in a stadium that is back to full capacity.  To rule is powerful.  Reach new heights. Build. Win. Rule. This is the path forward.” -Elizabeth Blackburn, Director of Strategy & Engagement, Cincinnati Bengals.

The “Rule The Jungle” mural is located on the side of Kitty’s Sports Bar on 218 West 3rd Street. It’s so close to the stadium that you can see it in the distance along the river. Kitty’s is the perfect destination to stop at before or after the game. The piece was made by artist Benjamin Thomas.

Cincinnati Against the World Mural

Another awesome new mural that’s getting everyone fired up is the “Cincinnati Against The World” painting. This painting includes a leaping Bengals tiger in Goose Alley. The mural is a collaboration by creative entrepreneurs Jarvarri Lewis, Floyd Johnson, Ohio Against The World, and Jason Snell. This piece is on the side of Holiday Spirits bar and gourmet hot dog window, Senate at 1538 Race Street. Around the corner at the front entrance is a window painting with the popular phrase “WHO DEY!” by artist Tom White. Yell it out as you walk in as a gesture of hello and comradery!

Be sure to grab one of the best hot dogs in town and a drink from some of the friendliest bartenders that add to the fun atmosphere.

Everyone involved in making these murals are creating something meaningful for the community. They are adding to the energetic environment that football gives to our city. This Championship Team brings people of all backgrounds together for a common goal. Show your pride, passion, and love for the game as we encourage our team to reach victory and make it to the Super Bowl for the second year in a row!

Connecting Art, Science, and Nature

The Science of Color Featuring Prismatica

One of the most captivating art installations that has ever come to Cincinnati is
currently being showcased at the Krohn Conservatory in Eden Park. The traveling
exhibition, The Science of Color Featuring Prismatica completely transforms the
environment into an interactive kaleidoscope of fascination and fun. This immersive
show has incredible spinning prisms of iridescents that are mesmerizing and exciting to
engage with. These transparent geodesic forms give off a magical effect that reflects
beautiful colors that change with every single angle. Light transmits different hues
throughout the space offering an entirely new perspective and experience of the
Conservatory that is absolutely enchanting!

The concept and development of this series involves many talented collaborators
that come from a variety of different backgrounds such as RAW Design– a Toronto-based
architectural firm, ATOMIC3– a multimedia group of light design installations, and the
Creos production team. The director of Krohn said, “We’re excited to bring a show like
this to Cincinnati. We wanted people to experience and understand the colors that they
see in the natural world. There’s a lot of pigments and interactions with pollinators that
take place that are very important to the sustainability of our planet.”

As you walk into the main entrance, you’re greeted with a few of the mystifying
sculptures that lead you into the Seasonal Floral Showroom where the majority of the
art pieces are located. Each dichroic prism is about 6 feet tall and is made up of panels
that reflects natural light that is shining in from the glass ceiling of the Conservatory
giving off a spectrum of rainbow colors. The show extends into the Bonsai Gallery,
Orchid House, and ends in the Desert House. Take your time wandering among the
prisms, you’re encouraged to manipulate every single one. Enjoy the infinite interplay
of light and colorful reflections that they create as you spin the structures and move
around them. Throughout the greenhouse there are interesting facts about the science
of color that are entertaining and educational to discover. Learn how flowers get their
color and what butterflies and bees see through the perspective of a pollinator. The
connections that are made through this installation between Art, Science, and Nature
are compelling with luminous layers of color and meaning.

Experience the Krohn Conservatory in a way you’ve never seen before with the
spectacular art show Primatica any day of the week from 10am – 8pm until October
16th, 2022 and don’t forget to interact with the art all around you!

Murals with Positive Messages

Cincinnati has influential art around every corner. One of the best things about this city
is the incredible number of murals all over town! The area is known for showcasing
local creators and world-renowned artists with public art in every neighborhood that is
convenient and fun to find! You can take a nice leisure walk, cruise on a city bike, or
ride around in your car to access many art pieces displayed freely for anyone to enjoy.
Embark on a journey to see murals with positive messages and meaning that goes
deeper than the surfaces they are painted on. These works offer a chance to be in the
present moment, to reflect and be inspired and to elevate your state of mind. So, keep
your eyes and hearts open to encounter and be encouraged by Cincinnati art!

Keep Moving, Keep Playing, Keep Dreaming Mural

Where To Find

In the West End, there are three large wall pieces with beautiful words that will make
you smile with happy thoughts when you see them! These huge murals have
motivational phrases painted on brick in bold letters on the side of the Seven Hills
Neighborhood House building. SHNH is a wonderful local resource and community
gathering space at the corner of Findlay and Baymiller Street. ArtWorks partnered with
them to create murals commemorating the life and work of Susan O’Malley, the original
creator of the designs. Their team carefully selected enthusiastic messages from
Susan’s work to share with residents or anyone just passing through.

Encouraging Mural in Cincinnati
Artwork by: Susan O’Malley

From left to right, there are three quotes placed side by side which come together as a
tryptic to create a positive narrative. They work as separate statements, as well as a
sequence of different affirmations with similar subject matter and style. This creates a
lively conversation that unifies them and reaches out to connect with the viewer. Each
section has a fade of colors seamlessly flowing behind the text. They are both
aesthetically pleasing and comforting to experience!

The first sentiment starts off with the words “IT IS POSSIBLE”, initially welcoming the
viewer to believe in themselves and imagine everything they can accomplish. The
second panel has a delightful rainbow background that says, “KEEP MOVING KEEP
PLAYING KEEP DREAMING”, a friendly reminder to follow your passions and never
give up. Last but not least, “YOU ARE SMARTER AND STRONGER THAN YOU
REALIZE”, sending out an endearing confirmation that everyone is capable of
succeeding! All three of these amazing pieces cohesively connect in an effort to
promote self-empowerment and reassurance that you can achieve anything!
The concept of displaying artwork that expresses positivity is to create a sense of
solidarity that is uplifting and helpful to the environment and community.

By taking in the art in Cincinnati, you gain a better understanding of the importance of
an artist, the work they create, and the role it plays in society. These murals bring out
the true essence of what art is all about and how it can be a source of good energy and
support. We hope to see more murals with positive messages pop up around town and
pick up our spirits at every turn.
